As this season begins, HC Track and Field is back in full swing. While the medals are won at the end of the race, this team prides themselves on the hard work they put in every moment leading up to their races.
“We value hard work, being able to go to practice and give it our all everyday, even when it’s a tough workout,” senior Matt Sadr said. “We take pride in being able to work our butts off to reach our end goal.”
Success on the track is a unique thing, because there are no shortcuts to a faster time or a longer jump, so the effort must be put in each and every day. The team has moved away from individual goals and towards a collective culture where every athlete, regardless of their event, respects the team’s efforts.
“As a team, our goal is always to win,” Sadr said. “We’re always pushing for our personal goals, but more so we’re looking to qualify as many people as we can for state and win state this year.”
Coach Gay and the coaching staff are very supportive in this endeavor. He does an excellent job at preparing the athletes to have their peak performance just in time for the championship meets in May.
“Our hurdles coach, [Isaiah McCall], was Gatorade player of the year for Kentucky in 2016 and has excellent workout plans that really prepare us for the season.” Sadr said.
One of the team’s favorite traditions is an annual kickball game with the Lafayette and Tates Creek teams. Not only does the HC team get to bond with each other, they get to spend time around outstanding athletes which can motivate them for the season even more.
HC track and field fosters a welcoming environment and are always looking for new members to join.
