The excitement is building for the HC Girls’ Lacrosse team as they prepare for the start of a new season. The girls will officially begin the season on March 6, facing off against Cooper. With new assistant coaches, hopes are high for the new season.
Molly Pugh stated that “I’m pretty hopeful. Our practices have been going well. We have three new assistant coaches this year, so it’s a different coaching staff, and I think they’ve been doing a lot better than what we’ve had in previous years.”
Pugh, a junior at HC, has been playing lacrosse for our team for the past four years. This year, she is one of four team captains.
“There are four captains, three of them are seniors. Audrey Webster, Ameila Webster, and Vonnie Allen-Guy,” said Pugh.
According to her, the best thing about lacrosse is the people on the team.
“I just like all the people, the environment, and how kind everyone is. It’s just this sport that I really enjoy playing,” Pugh stated.
In total, there are two head coaches and four assistant coaches.
“We have our head coach, his name is Tony Hicks, and we have our head JV coach, who is Dan Thompson, and then we have the two assistant coaches on both JV and Varsity.” Pugh said.
According to Pugh, “They all played lacrosse before, at least all the assistant coaches have, and it’s just helpful because they know what to teach us and what we need to steer away from.” Hopefully, the coaches’ experiences in the game will put our team ahead of the others.
However, there may be an issue with the lack of players on the varsity team.
Pugh stated “There are 13 girls on varsity, which is kind of tough because that means we only have one sub, because there’s 12 girls on the field at one time.”
Pugh stated that even though the varsity only has 12 members, “We have about four swings, and I’d say maybe about 15 on JV.” With more players, the team has less to worry about when it comes to injuries or exhaustion.
Overall, it’s looking to be a good season for the HC Girls’ Lacrosse team. It’s going to be a fun year, so come out and catch a game when you can. Be sure to show up for their first game on March 6 to cheer them on!
