Released on February 6, 2026, “Solo Mio” is a romantic comedy produced by Angel Studios. The film stars Kevin James as Matt Taylor, a fourth grade art teacher, who is left at the altar. He then decides to go on his non-refundable honeymoon alone.
The film was directed by brothers Charles and Daniel Kinnane. More of the family was also involved, with John and Patrick Kinnane co-writing the script alongside Kevin James and Peter Kinnane serving as editor. The film was shot entirely on location in Rome and Tuscany.
On the trip Matt makes some new friends such as Julain, played by Kim Coates, Meghan, played by Alyson Hannigan and Neil, played by Jonathan Roumies. They collectively distract and try to cheer up Matt. That’s when local coffee shop owner, Gia, takes a shine to Matt.
In the film, Gia is the force behind transforming Matt’s post-wedding trip into a better journey. Throughout the film, the audience learns more about Gia’s romantic woes and what really makes them a great pair. James noted that the chemistry with co-star Nicole Grimaudo felt effortless.
James said his real life friendships with Coates and Roumie made for easy chemistry on screen in an interview with UPI. “We were bonded before this and I love those guys,” said James. “That’s the key to a movie when you see it and you see the couples that are more side characters that come into the movie and take over the movie.”
Like many other films, the movie has emotional scenes with music. James pushed for emotional sound for the film’s peak moments. The soundtrack, which includes 15 tracks, features a mix of local Italian charm and appearances from big names like Andrea Bocelli and Ed Sheeran.
In an interview with “The Today Show,” James explains that he wanted to move away from your classic, cheesy love movie to explore a more mature romance. He also noted that the title is a play on the classic song but also reflects a theme of personal perseverance.
With a $4 million budget, the film grossed over $22 million globally. The film debuted with an 81% critic score and 95% audience score, making it the highest rated film of James’ career. Currently the film maintains a 96% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes, while critics are now more mixed at 78%.
