As the first semester comes to an end, students and faculty look forward to the upcoming break and holiday. Some are going on vacation, some are visiting family and friends in different states, and some are staying close to home. Although winter has arrived and temperatures are dropping, there are still many activities to incorporate the cold air and holiday spirit.
Ice skating is a popular activity during winter. Lexington offers two ice skating rinks. The first is the Lexington Ice Center located at 560 Eureka Springs Dr. General Admission tickets are $13.50 and skate rentals are $4. To buy a ticket and see skating times visit their website. The second is the Downtown Triangle Park Ice Rink. It is $18 for one hour of skating. During winter break their hours change. Monday through Saturday they are open from 12:30 to 9:30 p.m. and Sunday 1 through 8 p.m.
Rupp Arena also hosts an abundance of events during this time. The University of Kentucky Men’s Basketball team has started their season.They play Bellarmine at home on December 23 at 7:30 p.m. The lowest price for two tickets is $36.30. The team has made an impressive start to their season. They hold a record of six wins and one loss at home, which would lead to an exciting game. They are also ranked 27 in the NCAA Men’s Basketball NET Rankings and 19 in the Pomeroy Rankings.
To embrace the holiday spirit, the Kentucky Horse Park puts on their Southern Lights Holiday Festival. Take a drive through the lights and embrace the holiday season with a view of different holiday characters. They are open November 28 to December 31 (closed Christmas Day). Their hours are from 5:30 to 10 p.m. Tickets can be purchased online or at the gate and are $35 per car load: cash or credit cards are accepted.
Finally, the Kentucky Ballet Theater showcases their dancers through the production of their holiday shows. his year they are putting on the Nutcracker, Dolly Parton’s Smoky Mountain Christmas Carol, and Alltech’s Celebration of Song. The location of these productions vary between the Lexington Opera House and the Kentucky Horse Park. More performances this winter include Rudolph the Red Nose Reindeer at the Lexington Children’s Theatre; as well as, Collage: A Holiday Spectacular at the University of Kentucky Singletary Concert Hall.Tickets and information can be found on their corresponding websites.
