DanceBlue is a student-led organization that raises awareness and money for pediatric cancer. The University of Kentucky started DanceBlue to honor Jarret Mynear’s final request; “do something to help the Clinic.” UK hosts a 24 hour DanceBlue marathon every year and many high schools and middle schools host a mini five hour marathon, including HC.
Mynear was a special thirteen year-old boy who lived in Nicholasville with his mom, dad, and younger sister. Between the ages of two and when he passed at thirteen, he was diagnosed with cancer six times.
Mynear spent most of his life in a hospital, constantly receiving treatment and rehabilitation. He received two bone marrow transplants and amputation of his right lower leg.
The first ever DanceBlue was in 2006 and raised over $123,000. The first mini marathon was in 2008, hosted by Lexington Catholic High School. In 2013 DanceBlue was named the 8th largest collegiate fundraising event in the country.
The DanceBlue here at HC is special, because it’s run by an amazing committee who puts months of hard work into promoting the marathon and making sure everyone has fun.
On December 5, HC will host its own DanceBlue marathon for five hours to fight against pediatric cancer.
