The HC Model UN club recently returned from a successful showing at the North American Invitational Model United Nations (NAIMUN). This event is recognized as one of the most prestigious and competitive events in the country.
Students who participate in Model UN learn many skills that help them become successful in their future. Some skills they learn are public speaking, diplomacy and negotiation, and writing essays. When students go to conferences, they put these skills to the test and compete for a winning project, speech, or writing piece.
To reach these goals, the Model UN students met every Thursday to learn the basics involving presentations and activities, such as General Assemblies and Crisis Committees. Before each conference, members of the club must write an opinion paper discussing the position they were assigned by the conference. This allows students to get lots of research and information on their topic, so they can present feeling completely prepared. Since this portion of the club takes lots of time, many meetings are spent working on their papers before each conference.
“The most exciting part of the trip was probably the awards ceremony. It’s really great to see people’s effort pay off, especially when so many schools come to this conference.” Model UN member Eli Hoffman states.
HC Model UN only attends two highly competitive conferences a year, so they try to achieve all of their goals at those two conferences. This year at NAIMUN they won a few awards, and are coming home ready to prepare for their next conference.
