Over the past few months, the University of Kentucky’s Women’s Basketball team has put on a show for fans. The team went 23-8 this past season in the Southeastern Conference and won 11 out of 16 games in conference play. The Lady Wildcats played 18 games on their home court at Historic Memorial Coliseum. Coach Kenny Brooks created a strong starting lineup consisting of Georgia Amoore at point guard, Dazia Lawrence at shooting guard, Jordan Obi at small forward, Amelia Hassett at power forward, and Clara Strack at center.
Graduate Student Georgia Amoore, will no longer be on the team next season. She has exceeded all of her years of eligibility. Amoore has scored a high of 43 points in one game this past season, tying the school record, and claiming her place as one of the greats at UK.
Many players are also entering the transfer portal. Saniah Tyler, Tanah Becker, and Clara Silva are all entering for different reasons. Silva entered the portal with a “do not contact” tag. Tyler is transferring to become more noticed. Over this past season at UK, she averaged 2.3 ppg and sat behind Georgia Amoore, a future first-round draft pick. Becker did not play much at UK, but has potential at another school or again internationally.
Although some players are leaving, many are continuing in the program. Clara Strack, a rising junior, started every game this past season. She was the SEC Defensive Player of the Year. Teonni Key, who averaged 11.3 ppg and had her first double-double this past season. Amelia Hasset, a transfer from South Florida, averaged 8.6 ppg. Other potential returners include Lexi Blue (freshman, guard), Tanah Becker (freshman, guard), Gabby Brooks (sophomore, guard), Dominika Paurová (sophomore, guard), Cassidy Rowe (junior, guard), and Jordan Obi (graduate, guard).
Over the past two weeks the team played in the NCAA Women’s March Madness tournament. They were ranked fourth out of 68 teams. On March 21, they won a close game against Liberty who was ranked 13th. The score was 79-78. That win took the team to the Round of 32 where they played Kansas State who was ranked 5th. Unfortunately, the Lady Wildcat’s season came to an end when they lost 80-79.
The Lady Wildcats will begin the 2025-26 season in October. Although they are losing key players, the team will find a way to adapt and hopefully make a run to a spot in the Final Four.
