The HC Boys’ Lacrosse team is off to a strong 7-2 start this season. As they close out the season, the worries grow as a big challenge is coming because a large senior class prepares to leave.
Lincoln Rowland, a lacrosse player and a senior at HC, says the team’s success comes from better chemistry.
“Last year, I didn’t feel like we were as tight-knit,” Rowland said. “But this year, we actually feel like a family.”
This chemistry has helped the team win close games, including a recent overtime comeback against Frederick Douglass during which Rowland scored two goals for the win.
The team has also benefited from new players this season. These included Joseph Martinez, a former Tates Creek athlete, and several athletes from other sports. Their contributions have helped build depth and improve the team’s chemistry.
The team is led by seniors like Rowland, Martinez, Leland Bayne, and Mikey Rader. With about 15 seniors, experience on the field has been a big advantage.
Even with the strong start, the team is still working on discipline, and getting into the right spot for the postseason.
“Sometimes we get a little too relaxed,” Rowland said.
Looking ahead, losing so many seniors will be tough, and the younger classes are going to have to step up.
“[The team] will be affected pretty badly,” Rowland said.
Juniors like Beckett Saufley and Maxwell Thayer, along with younger players, will need to step up next season.
“I just want to keep it rolling and hopefully make this team the best it can be,” Rowland said.
Right now, the seniors are focused on finishing strong and making the most of their final year.
