This past year has been a great year for HC Girls’ Volleyball. With a record of 27-9, the team played well throughout the season. The team’s deep bond has helped them to do well. The coaches have also affected the team in a positive way. With many seniors graduating, next year’s season takes a lot of hard work from the younger players; however, the girls are willing to put in the effort.
Senior Heidi Fay stated that, “[This past season went] really well. We didn’t go that far into the playoffs, but our record was 27-9. So, overall, really well.” Even though they didn’t make it far in the playoffs, they still won against other high school teams like Lafayette, Paul Laurence Dunbar, Woodford County, and more, according to their MaxPreps website.
Fay has played on the HC Girls’ Volleyball team for five years now. “I was on the freshman team in eighth grade, and then varsity for four years,” Fay said. She also played volleyball at Morton Middle School and plans to continue playing in college. In the past season, Fay played the outside all-around position, but has also played positions such as middle blocker.
According to Fay, the coaches have had a positive impact on both her individually and the team as a whole. “[The coaches] definitely gave me opportunities to play even when I wasn’t comfortable playing a certain position,” Fay said. By pushing her to play, this helped her grow and become a better player.
To improve the team, Fay stated that the coaches “100% wanted the best camaraderie we had and wanted to squash any and all drama that the team could have.” The coaches made sure that all players were focused on teamwork to prevent distractions and keep everyone aligned. This helped the players to work better together on the court.
It may be a little harder for the players to work seamlessly on the court next year, as many of the seniors are graduating this year. “I think it’ll be a struggle because they’re losing all starting six, but I think the girls that we have can still do well,” Fay said.
Next year, HC can only hope that the current players recover from the loss of the seniors and do as well as they did this season. With the help of their coaches, the team should be able to put in hard work and have a great season.
