UK accepted a $150 million donation from The Bill Gatton Foundation to create a new arts district on campus in early December. This donation marks the largest gift received by the university. Bill Gatton, an UK alumni, has previously donated a generous amount for scholarships, students centers, and overall supporting the college.
Bill Gatton has donated a plethora of money to many colleges and universities for scholarships and helping students grow academically. His contributions have supported the Martin-Gatton College of Agriculture, the Martin-Gatton College of Food and Environment, the Gatton College of Business and Economics, the Gatton Student Center and scholarship programs including UK LEADS. In 1985, he established The Bill Gatton Foundation, with his eye on enabling future generations to succeed. Over the years, he has given dozens of gifts, with a particular focus on education in Kentucky, Northeast Tennessee, and Southwest Virginia.
According to LEX 18 News, the donation will fund construction for a several-hundred-seat theater, a new College of Fine Arts building, and create an integrated arts community that connects the campus to downtown Lexington. The project plans to extend to creating a pavilion and park to connect nearby blocks.
This project will enhance the surroundings nearby existing arts facilities and places like Rupp Arena, the Distillery District, and Gatton Park. UK President, Eli Capilouto, speaks about this donation as it can grow Lexington artistically and bring a more united community as UK takes up a majority of downtown Lexington.
A quote from Capilouto from LEX 18 News states, “Mr. Gatton understood so well that we advance as a state in so many ways — health and education, the economy and the well-being of our people. But he knew, too, that there must be places and spaces to gather, to convene, to come together, to share and have our horizons expanded and our souls replenished.”
With this massive donation and multiple plans for construction, the state legislature needs to approve these plans in order to issue bonds. In support, Gov. Andy Beshear, according to LEX 18, praises this donation’s broader impact, not just on the university. Similarly, Kentucky Senate President Robert Stivers, is intent on moving forward with this project. Kentucky House Speaker David Osborne focuses on the importance of this donation to the state. This grand gesture from Gatton exemplifies the importance of education and the significance of student support.
