Sanae Takaichi is set to be elected as Japan’s 1st female prime minister. According to the BBC she’s one of the most conservative contestants.. She is the leader of the LDP (liberal democratic party) and still needs the parliamentary’s vote to officially be the prime minister but many believe she’s got a fair shot.
Her position with the people is certainly mixed with her winning over the far right but at the expense of left learners and the less politically extreme.
Takaichi self proclaimed herself as “Japan’s Margaret Thatcher” which garnered some backlash. She’s against same sex marriage and women keeping their maiden name because it’s “goes against tradition”.
GB News translated a good chunk of her policy speech; more than half of which was discussion about immigration.
“We must pause and reconsider. Those who come with economic motives and claim refugee. Such people will be promptly sent home,” says Takaichi.
Japan is already a hard country to get into long-term and it’s safe to say Takaichi plans to make it even harder with stricter policies.
Many westerners have drawn similarities between Takaichi and U.S president Donald Trump because of their similar opinions on immigration and the effects it has on their countries.
“Foreign workers are taking away jobs from Japanese people,”says Takaichi
Takaichi says Japan must “go back to zero and pause all immigration to rethink the entire policy”. If she goes through with this plan it may impact many. Especially people that are there on work visas or are refugees.
All in all opinions on Takaichi are mixed throughout Japan and globally. Her next moves will be closely watched by the world.
