Top songs of the past decade

Eli Dyer, Editor-in-Chief

As the 2010-2019 decade comes to a close, people are reflecting on in this long decade. For me, this decade has encompassed the majority of my life and nearly all that I remember, leaving me a little lost moving forward. I hit adolescence in this decade, and the majority of the music I listen to was released in this decade.

Hello (2015)

The song “Hello”, which was released on October 23, 2015, was written and performed by British singer-songwriter Adele. The song received several awards, including the Grammy Award for Song of the Year. Honestly, it was difficult to choose only one Adele song to include in this list because of her penchant for producing excellent songs.

All of Me (2013)

John Legend is another artist who consistently produces amazing songs. This hit is particularly amazing and beautiful. Legend wrote this song for his wife and became a popular love song among couples and people in general.

I’m the One (2017)

“I’m the One” is a song most notable for the number of highly successful singers/rappers it features. The DJ Khalid song features Justin Bieber, Lil Wayne, Quavo, and Chance the Rapper. Although this isn’t my favorite song, it’s a memorable moment in the last decade.

Grenade (2010)

Similar to John Legend and Adele, Bruno Mars has released a number of hits in the 2010-19 decade, but none top the hit ballad off of his debut studio Album.

Black Beatles (2016)

The song “Black Beatles” was featured as the background music in a challenge sweeping the nation: the mannequin challenge. This challenge involved people freezing and acting like mannequins. Rae Sremmurd’s feature in this challenge catapulted the song to new levels of fame and recognition.

God’s Plan (2018)

Drake, one of the most iconic rappers of the decade, released his single “God’s Plan,” which topped the charts for 11 weeks, and stayed within the top 10 for 26 weeks.

Sunflower (2018)

Post Malone is a relatively new artist, but has achieved monumental fame. His iconic look and music have made him one of the top artists in the industry. His song, “Sunflower,” was released as part of the soundtrack to Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse and later reached number one on the Billboard Hot 100.

Shallow (2018)

The song “Shallow,” performed by Lady Gaga and Bradley Cooper, was featured as the highlight song on A Star is Born, the 2018 movie that achieved critical acclaim. The song is different from much of the work Lady Gaga does (in a good way, I think).

Royals (2013)

Lorde was 17 in 2013 when she released her debut studio album, which included the hit song “Royals.” The New Zealand artist was suddenly catapulted into international fame, with her song being nominated for Record of the Year at the Oscars.

Despacito (2017)

Luis Fonzi originally recorded the song in 2017, with a feature by Daddy Yankee. Both artists are Puerto Rican, but the song reached much farther, achieving international praise. The praise was renewed when Justin Beiber accompanied the two Puerto-Ricans on a remix of the already popular song.
