For the past few months, Lexington has had multiple road projects in planning and some being currently built. A lot of people can agree that some of the construction is unnecessary, noisy, and problematic for traffic. Especially when it can go to different projects that are more influential or needed.
A bad development is the new walkways being paved on Liberty Road near the Liberty Elementary school. It’s a waste of the city’s resources, as they only extend walkways that lead to one area or expand the width of said sidewalk.
On the other hand, there are good projects that are in construction, like the Alumni Drive shared path project. This project covers the long stretch of road with a bike lane and side walks across the whole road for easier transportation without using a car. Developments like these help connect neighborhoods, services, and businesses for people who don’t wish to use a car. This also improves safety for those who don’t use cars, which helps with the community’s well being.
Projects like these help promote businesses and job growth, since it expands the amount of area they can travel more safely and efficiently.
Another influential project is the Wilson Downing roundabout and turning lane. This will help ease traffic congestion by keeping traffic moving. This will make the busy intersection safer for people to walk through on cross walks and for drivers using the road too by 82% according to the Federal Highway Administration.
These projects will overall help the city of Lexington with only a few exceptions, but there are plenty of new projects to come. Good or bad they will impact the whole city of Lexington.
