In 2020, the year of Corona, people had a lot of time on their hands. This made for some creative and unique styles. At the beginning of 2020, many people didn’t have a clear style; by the end of 2020, three main styles have dominated the fashion world. People have taken inspiration from the 80’s, 90’s, and early 2000’s. Some styles have even evolved from old ones while others are completely new.

Indie Style

The Indie style is taking over the fashion looks of spring 2021, with popular stores like Zara, Brandy Melville, and Urban Outfitters getting inspiration for many of their looks from this aesthetic. These looks take pieces that were popular in the 90’s and early 2000’s. Things like Converse, light wash mom jeans, sweater vests, anything brown, baggy jeans, small purses, flannel jackets, and layered tee shirts are must haves in the closet of someone with an indie style. An everyday outfit would be sweatpants, a crop top and a flannel jacket. People with an indie style love to shop at Urban Outfitters, and Goodwill.

Preppy Style

Another popular style this year is the preppy style. This has been around for a long time, but got a bit of a makeover at the start of 2020. It has exploded and places like Zara, Love Shack Fancy, Golden Goose, and Revolve are taking inspiration for the 2021 spring /summer lines. Where this style used to be Vineyard Vines, Butter, Lilly Pulitzer, and J Crew. It now is more sophisticated and with the time. Some signature pieces would be things like Golden Gooses, Lululemon, straight jeans, tops with puff sleeves or a square neckline, Aviator Nation matching sweat suits, Roller Rabbit pajamas, anything Love Shack Fancy, smocked skirts, and colorful sweaters. An everyday outfit would be Lululemon leggings, an Aviator Nation sweatshirt, and a pair of Golden Gooses. This style can get pretty expensive though. Some cheaper places to get preppy looks are Star Fit, Rock and Rags,Veja Shoes, and Nordstrom Rack.

Modern Vsco Style

 The last style is modern Vsco. This style was started at the end of 2018. At its peak in the summer of 2019, you couldn’t find a person who didn’t have a Hydro Flask, oversized tee shirt and puka shell necklace. Since then it has evolved and is the most worn style out of the three. This is because it can take a while to completely change your style and my prediction is that by the end of the year almost all of the people who have the modern vsco aesthetic will have changed to an indie ,or preppy style. Some signature looks for this style are things like oversized sweatshirts, Aerie Leggings, oversized tee shirts, Air Force Ones, and skinny jeans and large sweaters. An everyday outfit would be an oversized tee shirt, black leggings, and air force ones. Places that every modern Vsco Girl would shop would be Aerie, Brandy Melville, Nike, and American Eagle.

The styles of 2021 couldn’t be more different,but all of them inspire cute looks. They will continue to evolve throughout the year and by the end of 2021 there might even be a new style or two. The aesthetics that came out of 2020 are inspiring the looks of 2021—unique and creative to start a new year.
