At HC, Civics Club has been helping students become more civically engaged with their community. After only being created by last year’s academy senior, Winston Fugate, as an AP Research project, his legacy has continued through hard work and many changes for its members. The new president, Savannah Peters, will talk about her benefit to the club for the future, along with how they plan on implementing this into not only high schools, but into middle schools as well.
“Half of our focus is pretty much the civics fair,” Peters said. “Which is really just any issue you’re passionate about and would like to talk to some professionals and work on a potential solution.”
Their civics fair project already has been decided, due to it being their topic last year. They will continue to expand their civic solution on graffiti around cities and its effect on how people portray their opinions in art.
“We started working with graffiti and how it’s usually done by minors,” Peters said. “And we think that we could kind of put a positive spin on that and implement some sort of public art areas within that, specifically geared towards graffiti.”
With the civics fair being completed at the end of the year, the club focuses on community service.
“Currently we are working on setting up something with Crawford Middle School,” Peters said. “We [plan to] go and help talk to the kids at the afterschool program about what our civics club is, how to be more civically engaged, and maybe starting something there as well as working with their civics teachers.”
In addition to Peters, Eli Hoffman and Wini Lile are juniors here at HC committing their time to the club.
“[Wini Lile] is a junior now, and our secretary,” Peters said. “And Eli Hoffman is Vice President.”
As the year progresses, plans for collaborative membership have been thought of with the Young Democrats club to work on voter registration within their communities.
“I think in November, we are going to work [with] the Young Democrats on a voter registration drive,” Peters said. “So [getting more membership,] it’s just kind of working with other clubs to build up that because there is a lot of crossover there.”
Through various meetings, fairs, and collaborations, the club plans to continue empowering the students and teaching them how to be civically engaged in their communities.
