For days, fans waited anxiously for LeBron James to share a major decision he teased online. The internet was full of guesses, but the main guess was retirement. Others thought it was a team change, or a big life update. When the moment finally came, though, the news wasn’t about basketball at all.
James revealed that he was a part of a promotional campaign for a Hennessy cognac partnership. Hennessy is a French cognac house, and they sell cognac in various expressions and editions.
Henessy accidentally leaked the campaign about 90 minutes prior to the video launching. Hennessy posted a video of James’ announcement in 2010 about him switching teams, which hinted towards what they were doing with him.
The video aired at 12:00 ET on Wednesday, October 8th. The last time James made an announcement it was on his decision to change teams, this led to many speculations from fans. The clip was dramatic. It started out in an interview format with the interviewer asking James where he was taking his talents this year. James then turned it into an ad promoting Hennessy with his response.
Reactions came fast. Some fans laughed at the surprise twist, while others said they felt misled. The commercial still went viral and pulled in millions of views. Even if it wasn’t the announcement fans were expecting, LeBron proved he still knows how to capture attention and keep everybody on their toes.
