As juniors start planning the beginning of their college application process and seniors get ready to submit their applications, becoming college and career ready is on many HC students’ minds. HC is offering a college fair on September 25, as well as in-school visits from colleges across the country.
Ms. Bowman, the College and Career Readiness Coach, is offering the fair to all seniors, as well as juniors who are interested.
“[The college fair] is going to be here, at HC, in the gym. The time frame is from 9:15 a.m. to 11:15 a.m. Everyone has 40 minutes in the gym,” Bowman said. “For example, from 9:15am to 9:55, if your counselor is Ms. Cahill or Ms. Manning, you will be in the gym and after that you will go back to class. So far we have 40 colleges that have signed up [for the college fair].”
The University of Kentucky, Transylvania University, the University of Louisville, Spalding University, and Morehead University are just a few of the schools that will have representatives at the college fair.
The representatives at the college fair will give students information about that school that they may not have had access to before.
“[Students] can get that face-to-face action.[Students] can ask more specific questions that [they] may have been nervous to email or maybe [they’ve] emailed and no one has gotten back to them,” Bowman said. “[Colleges] also usually have flyers. Another thing is [students] can ask more questions [about the application process and they] can get that real 1-on-1 feedback on how [their] application can stand out.”
The in-school college visits are available to all juniors and seniors to attend. In October, over 15 colleges will be coming to HC.
“The point of the in-school college visits [is to give opportunities to students that are busy] because [they] do extracurricular activities. This gives [students] 1-on-1 [with a college representative] that comes in from that university,” Bowman said. “It gives [students] an overview of scholarships, applications, and [representatives] always give [students their contact information. [So,] if a question comes up later [students] have [a representative’s] business card with them. The college visits are during school. It is on the student to make sure that they let their teacher know.”
The list of schools coming to HC include Princeton University, the University of Alabama, Campbellsville University, and many others.
September 22-26 will be college application week. This will allow seniors who are applying to college to get help with their applications. Participating students will be dismissed from their English classes and sent to the library. In the library, students will be able to get their essays reviewed, sign up for FAFSA, and get advice before they submit their applications.
If you are stressed about college or college applications, consider going to the college fair and attending the in-school college visits. If you have any questions, contact Ms. Bowman in room 163.
