This year HC is switching from sophomores and juniors taking the ACT to taking the SAT. This switch will lead to different opportunities for students.
With this switch testing is going to look a lot different. For starters students will need to prepare for the test differently, by possibly taking the P-SAT this fall. There haven’t been many students in the past who took the P-SAT; having the SAT this year could change those numbers.
However, this switch isn’t necessarily a positive thing. While it is said that some colleges don’t have a preference on the ACT or SAT, it is very clearly shown that in the state of Kentucky that the ACT is more widely known and used. According to OnToCollege.com, it shows that the students’ standardized test preference is the ACT, similar to many other regions surrounding Kentucky.
Similarly, students over many years at HC have gotten used to preparing for the ACT. Switching to the SAT, a test some students may have never seen before, can lead to negative scores that students could possibly not want to send out to colleges.
Another difference between the ACT and the SAT is the material it tests. The ACT has a wide variety of material it covers such as, english, math, reading, science, and writing. Which are all very important things that students should be able to be tested upon. Meanwhile, the SAT only tests students on reading, writing, and math.
Overall, the switch to the SAT this year could leave a positive impact at HC; however it is more likely to lead students to struggle once test time comes around.
