This year HC’s Go Green club has revised their leadership roles, and has plans for a school beautification project. Go Green is looking to educate students about the environment, as well as the importance of minimizing environmental impact. Go Green is led by staff advisor Tim Bailey, alongside student leaders Adrianna Harris, Vonnie Allen-Guy, and Sophie. Harris has provided some detail on the prospective agenda of the club this year.
The main focus of Go Green is environmental education and action. Harris has been a member her entire high school career and advanced into club leadership as a senior.
“Go Green is a club that is focused on raising money and doing service for the environment, so we do a lot of campus cleanups [along with] some things through UK Forestry,” Harris said. “We also just educate people about energy usage [as well as] the plants and trees in their [area].”
Harris also emphasized the impact of Go Green, and how beneficial it is to not only other students, but its members as well.
“You get community service hours that are both impactful on your resume and impactful in real life,” Harris said. “[As] you’re always making a [positive] impact on the environment through every hour we do at Go Green.”
Seniors Harris, Allen-Guy, and Hirschowitz decided to take a new approach to club leadership. They made the decision to remove rank and rather focus on a group leadership with delegated responsibilities.
“I am a co-president this year, [as] we decided [that having] three co-presidents who can take over during different times, rather than having set positions, [would be way] easier,” Harris said. “However, we each do have certain things that we do, for example [I’m in charge of] communications. I run [our] Instagram, and do posters and stuff like that.”
Harris and the leadership team of Go Green have changed their goals for this year, prioritizing membership and reaching a larger percentage of the student body.
“We want to get some more members, especially the younger ones, because right now we’re mostly juniors and seniors,” Harris said. “[As well as] just helping Henry Clay positively impact the environment, because Henry Clay is a really big school, [and] we use a lot of energy that isn’t entirely necessary.”
In their last year, the club’s leadership has points of improvement for the club. Harris has expressed interest in working with different local nature reserves, besides a general increase in membership, particularly with younger students.
This spring, the club has plans to revamp HC’s courtyard with new greenery and to overall clean up the area. “We’re hoping we can plant some native flowers and then even [have] a little butterfly garden in the courtyard,” Harris said.
To join Go Green, students can follow their Instagram, @hchs.gogreenclub, for updates as well as a link to the GroupMe. All meetings are open for new members in Mr. Bailey’s Rm. 155.
