Laken Snelling, a 21 year old student at the University of Kentucky, was arrested on August 31 with multiple charges regarding the death of a baby. Police were called in on an unresponsive baby at 10:30 a.m. August 27, on Park Ave. The child was found in a closet, wrapped in a towel placed in a trashbag. Police then pronounced the child dead on the scene and identified Snelling as the mother of the infant. She was taken in under charges of abuse of a corpse, tampering with physical evidence, and concealing the birth of an infant.
The University of Kentucky has recognized Snelling as a former student and member of the university’s Stunt team since her withdrawal from the school after her first court appearance.
An autopsy was performed on the infant by Coroner Gary Ginn. The results were released on September 3, and were read as inconclusive on the cause of death. It was confirmed that the gender of the infant was male and that the time of death was 10:59 a.m. on August 27. The autopsy is still open in order to consider all facts of this case.
During Snelling’s arraignment, she pleaded not guilty to the three charges against her. However, she confessed to the birth of the child and to cleaning the evidence of the birth, including placing the child in the trashbag. The judge ordered Snelling to her parents’ house in Tennessee on house arrest, with the schedule of her hearing being for 8:30 a.m. on September 26.
