This summer lots of different shows were very big, one of them being the newly released show “We Were Liars.” This show was filled with lots of twists and turns, following, main character Candace (also known as Cady) living on a family island with lots of hidden family secrets. This show is based on a book by E. Lockhart, but gives viewers a visual on the story which allows people to dive deeper into the story, and what is actually happening between the characters.
“We Were Liars” has gained a lot of attention from all over the world sitting #1 on Prime Video’s list of Top 10 TV Shows. Pulling in readers and watchers with a mystery that grabs their attention and keeps them interested.
Cady suffers from amnesia caused by a traumatic event that took place during Summer 16, which is what she names all of her summers based off of her age. Cady is trying to figure out herself what happened to her the last summer she was on that island, and what caused her to be hospitalized.
The whole show features Cady begging every family member to tell her what happened to her on the night of the accident, but no one can tell her because every time they try to, she has an episode and forgets everything they say, which leads to her having to figure it out herself.
The message they try to share through the show is the danger of pervasive lies: how all of the family secrets and lies lead to great tragedy with three of their children dead. One with horrible brain injuries not knowing that some of her best friends have passed away, and her brain is telling her they still are alive.
Prime Video has yet to announce if there will be a second season, but there is a second book and a “We Were Liars” season 2 writers room was already in progress. At the end of season one showing that Johnny, one of the main characters who died in the house fire, cannot cross over because of his moms addiction, it’s holding him back from leaving the family behind and going to heaven. E. Lockhart teased that season 2 could very well delve into the events of her 2022 sequel book, “Family of Liars,” which follows the story of the older Sinclair sisters who were the three daughters of the very wealthy man who owns the family island when they were teenagers in the late ’80s.
