This year was full of sports and big accomplishments. Events from the NCAA, NFL, NBA, WNBA, and Olympics attracted fans from all over the globe. Each league holds their own big events like national championships, drafts, and regular season wins.
Basketball’s most popular tournament, March Madness, was a big event that gained lots of supporters. For the men’s teams Florida took home the National Championship trophy when they beat Houston 65-63 on April 7th. Florida’s season started off strong by winning most of their games and scoring over 70 points each game. The Gators’ teamwork and individual strength helped them get to the championship.
During the Women’s March Madness tournament, Uconn took home the National Championship beating South Carolina 82-59. Uconn had a good season, landing as a number two seed, and beating three number one seed schools by at least ten points. With their team chemistry and their faith they put their all into that game to bring home the win.
In the NFL,the Eagles took home the win during the Super Bowl LIX beating the Kansas City Chiefs 40-22. This was their first win against them since 1960. This win broke Kansas City’s winning streak in Super Bowl 2 years in a row.
Penn State Volleyball defeated Louisville 3-1 in the National Championship match this year. Penn State has a long winning streak of 109 matches. The Nittany Lions close their season at 35-2 and take home the title of both National Champions and Big Ten champions. Their run to the national title included wins over Delaware State, North Carolina, Marquette, Creighton, and Nebraska, before finally culminating with the victory over Louisville in front of an NCAA Women’s Volleyball Championship record crowd of 21,860 fans.
This year’s WNBA Draft led to big new players entering the WNBA. Paige Buekers coming in as the number one pick from Uconn after her team brought home their National Championship win, she will now be playing for the Dallas Wings. Sedona Prince was not a pick in this year’s draft leading her to be a 8th year senior at TCU. The Dallas Wings owned the top pick in the draft. The Seattle Storm had the second pick, and the Washington Mystics owned the third and fourth selections. The league’s first expansion team in 17 years, the Golden State Valkyries selected the fifth.
