The topic of the Kids’ Champion Award, the opening of “The Hill”, and legislative priorities for the district were observed by a student from HC at the school board meeting on Monday, April 28.
The Kids’ Champion award goes to a hardworking member of the FCPS staff each month. For the month of April, Troy Woods, a paraeducator at Russell Cave Elementary was nominated.
Michelle Wilson, principle of The Hub for Innovative Learning and Leadership, known as “The Hill” explained the progress of the new building which opens this fall.
The Hill offers 39 dual credit courses, 26 industry certifications, and 19 career pathways. Some students attending the school next year even helped design it, by selecting building materials and the types of chairs that are best suited for learning.
A key pillar when designing how the school would work is intentional integration. Among the 19 career pathways, some of them could work together on different projects.
For example, the welding and automotive technology pathways could design something for the culinary arts. The district has also had many legislative updates which were presented by lobbyist Abby Piper. So far in 2025, 1,080 bills have been filed and over 140 have been passed.
Some of the bills that will impact students in the coming years include; dual credit scholarships, the cell phone ban, and DEI at postsecondary institutions.
Other highlights from the meeting are videos of student performances, discussions about next years’ budget, and family survey results presented by Chief of Staff Tracy Bruno.
Overall, the board works hard to keep our families safe and learning, and they have many priorities for the next school year,
