On Friday, February 28th, FCCLA competed in the Regional STAR Events for the first time in almost 10 years. The club participated in competition areas such as Fashion Design, Professional Presentation, and Foods and Nutrition. In Fashion Design, HC finished in first place and will advance to the State STAR Events for a chance to compete at the national level. HC placed second in both Professional Presentation and Foods and Nutrition.
“FCCLA stands for the Family, Career, and Community Leaders of America,” Chapter President and Regional Vice President Ainsely Sanger said, “and it is a leadership club.”
HC Foods and Nutrition teacher Alexis Clauch started the FCCLA chapter at HC last year, but this is the first year that the club has competed in the STAR Events.
“STAR stands for Students Taking Action with Recognition,” Sanger said, “and there’s a lot of different events you can compete in. For example, we had people competing in Fashion Design, Professional Presentation, and Foods and Nutrition. There’s a project outline that you have to follow, and the point of it all is to grow your leadership and presentation skills.”
The club traveled to Danville on February 28th to compete in the Regional STAR Events where they experienced success in a variety of areas.
“[We placed first place in] Fashion Design,” Sanger said. “Second place was in Professional Presentation and Foods and Nutrition.”
Sanger, along with Emaline Mau and Olivia Hawes, worked together on their Fashion Design project titled “Recycled Runaway.” Through extensive preparation, they placed first and will go on to compete in the State STAR Events.
“We got two groups with second place,” Sanger said. “So, if the first place chooses to not go to state, they will compete in state.”
Zoe Stapleton and May Oo placed second in Foods and Nutrition, and Greta Mattmiller placed second in Professional Presentation. The groups could potentially compete in the State STAR Events alongside FCCLA members Sanger, Mau, and Hawes.
