Many students at HC pursue community service for a variety of reasons. For some, it is a requirement. Some government classes require service hours, like the Academy program at HC. Usually these requirements fall around 10 to 20 hours per year. But for others, community service is simply a way for them to give back to their community in any way they can. But how does one find these opportunities?
Fortunately for students, HC offers a variety of community service opportunities. The first of these is HC’s Key Club. Focusing on community service, the club has many opportunities which include volunteering at God’s Pantry and school-based events such as Safe Halloween in October. During these one-hour meetings, the club participates in other, smaller service activities as well as preparing for the major ones. It is led by Ms. Hicks, and meetings are held every other week on Mondays.
Another club that offers community service opportunities for HC students is Dance Blue, which is a program also offered at many other high schools in Lexington as well as the University of Kentucky. All of the Dance Blue groups culminate in a “marathon” program in which people must remain standing for hours at a time. Although not as lengthy as the UK program (which lasts for an entire 24 hours), HC’s 5 hour program is more accessible (as it is easier to stay awake for five hours rather than an entire day) and also brings in a lot of money for children with cancer, which is the goal of all Dance Blue programs. It is headed by Ms. Isenhour. For community service hours, both the preparation meetings and 5 hour program count.
Yet another opportunity available for HC students is the Civics Club. It focuses on civic service, a good example of which is canvassing (which the club did during the fall semester for Andy Beshear). Unlike the two mentioned above, the Civics Club also participates in other civics-related activities. For example, the club is currently doing a Civic Action Project for which each student will propose a way to help improve their community.
These are just three of the many community service opportunities available for HC students. For more information on HC clubs (community service based or otherwise), check out the clubs and activities page of HC’s website.
