Next school year, HC is transitioning to block scheduling, which is the system that the other high schools in Lexington have already implemented. Under block scheduling, not only will classes be longer (there will now be four classes a day with classes alternating), but HC students will now have eight classes. This means that there are now additional elective opportunities for HC students, and because of this many new electives have been proposed to fill the two additional classes.
One of these that has been finalized is a program to allow HC student-athletes to take a class with their teammates. This program will be optional, and is currently in a pilot phase including the following teams: football, baseball, boys’ soccer, and boys’ basketball team members will have the opportunity to take Conditioning for Men with their teammates, and girls’ soccer team members will have the option to take Controlling Stress/Yoga. Girls’ basketball team members will be able to take Conditioning for Women, and wrestling and track team members will have the option to take either conditioning class depending on their gender. As this is currently a pilot program, it is possible that this opportunity will be extended to other HC sports teams, but as of now only those eight teams are included.
Other proposed electives at HC include Advanced Political Science, AP Comparative Government, Advanced STEM Topics, and Advanced History of Modern Media. Beyond new electives, HC is also offering a new pathway system next year, which include Medical Science, Automation Engineering, Teaching & Learning, JROTC, Hospitality, Travel, and Tourism, Management & Entrepreneurship, Computer Programming, and Web Development.
Many students will use the additional elective classes for extra academic classes, but it’s great to see that there will be other options for students, especially since these classes will not be limited to HC student-athletes. High school can be a stressful time, so on top of new academic opportunities it’s great to see block scheduling being used to allow students to develop their athletic skills.
