On Monday, January 27, 2025, superintendent Dr. Demetrius Liggins got his contract renewed for the next four years. He has been with the board since 2021, and his previous contract is set to expire in June 2025.
A Kentucky Department of Education salary report claims Dr. Liggins is the highest paid administrator in the state with a salary of $381,000. What’s interesting is that he signed for the exact same amount as the previous term. Typically you’d account for inflation and other factors, but he’s getting paid the same amount.
There was severe disagreement about the renewal, which led to petitions being formed for both sides. On Thursday, January 23, a petition created by Rachel Buser, mother of three FCPS children, had 359 signatures.
Buser’s goal was to spread information to people about why Dr. Liggins shouldn’t be superintendent again, and tried to persuade people to vote against the contract renewal.
In response to that, Dr. Liggins commented that he has improved the district under his leadership, including an increase in academic performance and the overall safety of the schools. He also said that he has a plan for continued improvement and growth during his next contract.
In contrast, parent Demarcus Lewis also created a petition about Dr. Liggins renewal, which gained over 1300 votes in just three days.
Lewis’s goal was to inform people about all the good things Dr. Liggins has done for FCPS, and persuaded people to vote in favor of renewing his contract.
Even through this controversy, Dr. Liggins was able to secure his contract and has had lots of support stepping forward.
