Winter Break is the last two weeks before the New Year. It is after the last three hard working days of school taking finals, and it begins with a perfect amount of time to get ready for the holidays!
The weather in Kentucky has always been strange, but when the snow does fall, there are many things to do. Some go to a hill, get a sled and ride down it, some lay on the ground and make snow angels, some take snow and make snowballs and throw them at their friends, and then some take the snow and make a snowman.
Even when it doesn’t snow, there is still ice. At Downtown Lexington Triangle Park you can ice skate with friends and family! It is open Saturdays 12:30-8:30 pm and Sunday 1:00-8:30 pm. You can also skate at the Lexington Ice Center, and can take personal lessons for 30 minutes for $33.
There are many holidays celebrated during winter break including Christmas, Hanukkah, Kwanzaa, New Years Eve/Day, and Boxing Day.
Christmas is celebrated on December 25th, and is a Christian holiday celebrating the birth of Jesus Christ. To celebrate people spend time with their family and loved ones with gift giving, decorations, and festive meals.
Hanukkah is an eight day Jewish festival which shows respect and honor of the Second Temple in Jerusalem. It is usually in December and involves lighting the menorah candles, playing dreidel, and eating foods like latkes.
Kwanzaa is a week-long celebration honoring African heritage in African-American culture. It includes activities like lighting the kinara, and discussions of the seven principles of Kwanzaa.
New Year’s Eve is celebrated the night before January 1st, celebrating the New Year. Celebrating often includes parties, fireworks, food, and watching the ball drop from New York on your TV.
Boxing Day is celebrated December 26th, in the UK and other commonwealth countries to give gifts to service workers and those in need.
There are a variety of holidays to celebrate and activities to do during winter break and they should all be done with friends and family!
