On November 15th, the HC Football team learned that Coach Demetrius Gay would be stepping down to spend more time with his family.
After five years as head coach, 23 years with the football team as an assistant coach, and three years as a student athlete, Coach Gay said that it was time to turn the position over to someone else.
“I have great memories with the football program,” Gay said, “And our favorite memory is when we won our first game in 2019. But football takes a lot of time and I need to spend more time with my family”.
Football is important to the HC community, and the search is already on for someone to replace the coach.
When players heard about the news they reacted sadly, and were a little mad. But when they heard the full story and the reason why he was stepping down, they were more understanding.
During his last season, Coach Gay led Henry Clay to a big win against Paul Laurence Dunbar High School, which will be marked as the last in his tenure as a football coach for HC.
As for now, we don’t know anything about the new head coach, or how the football program is going to change in the future.
