The annual Safe Halloween event hosted by HC’s Key Club took place on the night of October 30th, and consisted of spooky activities such as trick or treating inside of the building. It was free for all who attended. This year, Key Club had a great turnout, and served the community by putting on a spectacular night for children in the area.
“Key Club is a club that you can do for community service,” Key Club Special Events Chair Chris Barreiro said. “It is also a good opportunity for underclassmen to get service hours for classes, and also a really good leadership role where people can take on tasks to make the school a better place.”
HC’s Key Club participates in and hosts many events throughout the year that support the community, but Safe Halloween stands out from the rest.
“Safe Halloween is an event that we usually host every year,” Barreiro said, “and usually provide candy for kids that are around the area that don’t feel safe outside of the school area … It’s our biggest event every single year. It helps people with service hours and for opportunities for them to lead in the future.”
Safe Halloween provides children in the community with a safe and fun environment to engage in Halloween festivities.
“We had four different things,” Barreiro said. “We had the graveyard, bat cave, pumpkin patch, and then the witch’s lair … [Children] can feel safe inside and for them to have a good environment and good interactions with people.”
In order for Safe Halloween to be successful, collaboration was essential for Key Club as they prepared the days leading up to the event.
“We had everything set up beforehand,” Barreiro said. “[Activities were] organized in one area, and then we had multiple people working those events in those areas. We had a hallway design where one person would go to this area, and then they would move in the hallway like a maze. Then they would go out the same way they came in.”
Additionally, the planning and advertisement of the Safe Halloween event proved to be an important component of its success.
“We had a really big success this year,” Barreiro said, “because of the promotion of it from the social media pages. We also had a lot of people since COVID as well. The way that everything went smoothly, the advertisement, and the way it was put up originally was a really big success.”
