The Cincinnati Bengals enter the 2024 season with high expectations, helped by a young and new roster and hopes of recapturing their AFC North dominance after a mixed 2023 campaign.
Last season, the Bengals finished with a 9-8 record, narrowly missing the playoffs. This year, with a lighter schedule (ranked 28th in strength of schedule), and several key roster upgrades, they aim for a more consistent performance.
The offseason saw significant changes for Cincinnati, particularly on defense and the offensive line. Notably, they signed defensive tackle Sheldon Rankins and safety Geno Stone, helping to fortify a defense that struggled with injuries and inconsistency last season. Offensively, new starting running back Zack Moss was brought in to replace an aging Joe Mixon, before Mixon’s trade to the Houston Texans. The Bengals also made significant moves in the draft, selecting Offensive Tackle Amarius Mims in the first round to protect their star quarterback Joe Burrow.
Speaking of Burrow, his health is the most important in this offense. The Bengals suffered a setback last year when Burrow missed time due to injuries, disrupting their offense. This year, a revamped offensive line led by new addition Amarius Mims and veteran Trent Brown looks to give Burrow more time in the pocket, allowing him to connect with top receivers like Ja’Marr Chase and Tee Higgins.
The Bengals’ coaching staff saw a key change with the departure of offensive coordinator Brian Callahan, who left to become the head coach of the Tennessee Titans. Dan Pitcher, formerly the quarterbacks coach, was promoted to offensive coordinator, providing some continuity as he has worked closely with Joe Burrow since his rookie year. Pitcher’s familiarity with the system should help ease the transition. On the defensive side, Lou Anarumo continues in his role as defensive coordinator, a position he has excelled in particularly with mid-game adjustments.
Despite facing competitive AFC North rivals like the Ravens and Browns, the Bengals are favored to have a strong season. Predictions suggest they could finish with 10-11 wins, potentially securing another division title. The key will be whether Burrow can stay healthy and if the defense, now reinforced with new talent, can limit opposing offenses.
