Last year, HC students abided by a rigorous bathroom policy that did not comply with the needs of students. Students could not use the restrooms during first period, advisory, or sixth period. This year, however, an improved bathroom policy has been implemented following administrative changes at HC. The administration team has three new members, including a new head principal, Antonio Blackman.
On the Friday before the first day of school, an email was sent out to students describing the use of restrooms for the 24-25 school year. The email informed students that the bathrooms will be closed during all five minute class transitions. In past years, the bathrooms became congested during class transitions. It is unacceptable for students to struggle to use the restroom at school, as the restrooms are essential facilities.
The restrooms have also been known for their uncleanliness in the past. Many students using the bathrooms during class transitions are traveling with their personal belongings. Not only does this create an even more crowded environment, it also creates the potential opportunity for belongings or trash to be left behind. School restrooms should demonstrate a hygienic environment, and should not lead students to feel disgusted as a result of filth.
On the first day of school, students recall the sound of drilling, which was heard from the interior of many classrooms. Gates were installed at the bathroom entrances for the purposes of locking the bathrooms during class transitions. By eliminating a common gathering space, students are more likely to move efficiently to their classes.
In a more recent email, it was clarified that the ten-ten rule from previous years will remain in place this year. The policy prohibits students from leaving class during the first and last ten minutes of each period. The combination of new and old bathroom policies works to prevent students from skipping class, resulting in more engaged students. Attendance and engagement are key to students’ academic success.
The email also gave students with medical notes specific directions to obtain full-time accessibility to the restrooms. Students can go to the front office and receive a pass that goes on their badge, permitting them access to the restrooms at any time. In the event of an emergency, students may seek help from administration to unlock the bathroom gates. Administration has created a deliberate policy for the use of bathrooms this year, considering the needs of different students throughout the school day.
