After being a counselor for 22 years, April Cain takes on a new role at HC as the college and career counselor. As Cain approaches this new opportunity with solid experience under her belt, she enters her new job at one of the most busy times of the year.
Though both of these pathways require different prerequisites and experience, they become the most intense during the fall semesters.
“So the biggest challenge is that for careers there is a huge project due in October but that is also a busy month for college,” Cain said. “So it feels like the two biggest projects I have with this job are during the same month.”
Cain tackles the intensity of the fall semester by contacting advisory teachers to communicate with students and giving them packets with information about scholarships, career internships, and the common application.
“I included lots of information in the packets we give to students for things like college rep visits, scholarships,” Cain said.
Cain also has also created an outlet for seniors to ask questions and troubleshoot either with career or college questions. This event will take place in the library during the seniors’ English class period. Even though Cain is new to the job, she has prepared for college and career week and expects it to run smoothly.
Even though with this transition Cain serves a different role at HC, she often calls upon her counseling experience to help her.
“Luckily because the jobs are related I can bounce ideas off of them,” Cain said. “They are still a resource for me.”
Cain is grateful to have a strong connection with the counseling team at HC as the C&C coach. Cain has always been interested in the post graduate aspect of counseling.
“As a counselor, I’ve always loved the piece of college and career counseling,” she said. “It’s always been something I have been trying to learn about and promote.”
Having this natural curiosity has made this transition seamless for Cain as she takes on more responsibility in the HC community.
