On September 22, Fayette County Administrators released information to parents and teachers regarding new safety measures at FCPS extracurricular events. The new guidelines were put in place following an increase in negative behaviors on FCPS school property, such as profanity directed towards adults, smoking and vaping, and disorderly conduct. The measures include:
- “Increased administration and FCPS police presence at events;
- Select high school football games may start earlier or be moved to Saturday afternoons;
- No backpacks or outside food and drinks;
- Denial of re-entry into games;
- No unaccompanied elementary/middle school students at events;
- One-year ban for students/spectators removed [from events] due to behavior.”
By implementing these guidelines, FCPS hopes to eliminate the heightened presence of disruptions at athletic events.
While there have not yet been any extracurricular events on HC’s campus that have been rescheduled due to the new measures, this could possibly affect many spectators and players who plan on attending. For instance, the Frederick Douglass HS Football game versus Bryan Station HS was rescheduled from Friday, October 13 to Saturday, October 14 at 12PM. This schedule change may have interfered with players’ and spectators’ schedules outside of football, as high school football games are traditionally played on Fridays. HC students should follow Fayette County on X, formerly known as Twitter, and Facebook to stay informed on details regarding the timing of extracurricular events.
