This year’s homecoming has ignited debate as dates have been changed around. The dance was initially supposed to take place on September 9th, which would follow the homecoming football game on September 8th. However, the dance had to be moved due to not having enough time to arrange everything- sparking contention amongst the student body.
Football players, in particular, are upset over this change in date because the dance will no longer follow their homecoming game.
“[The date change] is confusing and weird because no one knows what is happening,” senior football player Walden Cole said. “It’s our senior season, so everyone wants it to be perfect.”
Luckily, even though the date of the dance was changed, the spirit of the team does not falter.
“It’s not an on-the-field [event],” Cole said. “The game will be the same as every other game, there just won’t be the dance following.”
By means of student petition, a survey was created in order for the student body to vote on when they wanted the dance to be and what theme they want for the dance. This allowed students to have a say.
“[Student council] talked to our sponsor, Ms. Richmond, and we found a solution,” Student Council Event Coordinator Mamebousso Ndour said. “We gave the student body a chance to pick a date by sending a survey to the [student] GroupMe.”
While students are still upset over not having the initial date of the homecoming dance, they are glad that faculty members took the initiative to get the student body involved in deciding when the dance should be, as it is an event for the students.
The homecoming court events will take place at the game, per usual. Advisories should have already elected their nominations for the homecoming court.
The homecoming dance date and theme are yet to be finalized and released by student council. The homecoming football game will still take place on the initial September 8th date.
